Occupational Health & Safety

PNGFP aims to ensure that all our workplaces are safe for our stakeholders, including employee, contractors and visitors under the unifying theme of:
Safety - Think It, Talk It, Work It
We establish measurable objectives and continually improve our practices and processes in order to achieve these objectives. Our documented management system forms the basis for all operations undertaken by the Company and its representatives.
PNGFP has adopted and implemented a five-step safety plan that all employees must embrace. Known as the “PNGFP Work Safe Plan”, it consists of the following steps:
- Premises & Housekeeping: To keep buildings and work areas in good condition, and free of obstruction and spills, so that people have less risk of falling.
- Mechanical, Electrical and Personal Safeguarding: Protecting employees from injury and ensure that all machinery is enclosed with guards to prevent accidental contact.
- Fire Protection and Prevention: Safeguard our employees by protecting against fire.
- Accident Reporting: Collect information on accidents so prevention measures can be established.
- Safety Organization: Employees must show commitment to preventing injuries, minimizing damage, and avoid interruption to the business.
PNGFP is strongly committed to the health and safety of employees and visitors, and has appointed health and safety representatives to provide communication links between employees, management and the onsite client. Regular meetings take place to enable safety issues to be resolved, and to enhance occupational health and safety communications throughout the company.
All employees are covered under PNG’s Occupational Health and Safety Legislation.
HIV/AIDS Policy
PNGFP recognizes that HIV/AIDS is a global problem that impacts our staff, their dependents, communities, our customers and the infrastructure where we operate.
PNGFP acknowledges it has a responsibility to manage the impact of HIV/AIDS. The Company is a member of BAHA (Business Coalition against HIV / AIDS) and has a Workplace Policy that seeks to:
- Protect employees’ right to work within a non-discriminatory environment with medical confidentiality;
- Facilitate education and training initiatives, at work and within the community, that aim to reduce the risk of infection;
- Improve understanding about the impact of HIV/AIDS on our employees and business;
- Support community-based HIV/AIDS research and management programmes;
- Ensure medical response procedures are available for any employee in the company who may be exposed to infection as a result of their work; enhance the quality of life of people living with HIV / AIDS through a holistic approach to health;
- Track the effectiveness of our interventions; and engage other stakeholders, such as non-government organizations, workers’ unions and local communities, to pool critical resources and share information on best practice and lessons learned.
Smoking And Betel Nut Chewing
It is widely acknowledged by the medical profession and general community that smoking cigarettes is hazardous to an individual’s health, as well as the health of others exposed to cigarette smoke. For these reasons, PNGFP has strict requirements regarding smoking on the site, and smoking is prohibited in all the production areas, offices, and amenities areas, including change rooms, toilet blocks and showers.
Chewing buai has been shown to cause cancer of the mouth and is therefore considered a serious health hazard. Chewing betel nut (buai) within PNGFP controlled work areas is strictly prohibited. Employees found chewing buai during working hours, including breaks, will face disciplinary action.
